Kids and Head Lice

It is very important to keep in mind that head lice are contagious. Head lice are parasites that will live in anyone’s hair whether long, short, clean, or dirty. They are especially common among kids who are in day care, preschool, or any other type of group setting. They also spread easily by head-to-head contact, and when kids share or exchange clothes, hats, brushes, and blankets. Unfortunately if you find signs of lice on your child’s head, it is important that you remind them that everything will be alright and that they did nothing wrong to get the lice. With a little professional help, you can get through the infestation.

It is also key that after you receive a school’s note about head lice, that you do a lice-check on your child’s head and neck. Although head lice are tiny they can still be seen by the naked eye. Make sure to check their entire scalp, paying close attention behind ears and around the nape of their neck.

Lice eggs take a few days to hatch, so you may only find eggs than actual lice. Nits look like tiny yellow, tan, or brown oval-shaped dots that remain firmly attached to the hair shaft close to the scalp before they hatch. However, adult lice are about the size of a sesame seed although they can be smaller if they’ve just hatched and are grayish white, brown, or tan in color. They are also quick and hard to spot because they tend to hide from light. But they hang close to the scalp because that is their main food source.

If you notice red bumps or sores around the scalp this could be an indication of head lice from scratching. Lice do bite and when kids scratch the itchy bites, they become infected and crusty.
